Frank Castle's family was murdered as a payback for his final FBI undercover assignment when the son of a criminal-minded, ruthless businessman named Howard Saint (John Travolta) was mistakenly killed by Castle. He had lost any confidence in the police & courts to put the killer of the family and his thugs behind the bars and aims to wreak vengeance by tracking down the offenders responsible for the demise. He has no superpowers to battle the evil he sees - only his ferocious intelligence, his years of fighting experience and, above all, his iron determination to avenge those rejected by society's criminals. President James Dale of the United States and his right-hand man, Jerry Ross discover that an army of Martian UFOs are hovering around the Earth, and everyone has a different response. Some, like Texan alcohol dealer Art Land and slimy nesman Jason Black, just want to make a profit out of it. Others, such as TV hostess Nathalie Lake, Land's spiritualist wife Barbara, and the Southern-like Norris family, are excited, and some, like Dale's wife, Marsha, and daughter, Taffy, don't care. Richie Norris is extremely intelligent but is only respected by his insane grandmother, while his older brother Billy is favored for joining the army. General Decker doesn't trust the Martians and insist they fight, but General Casey is more optimistic. The Martians appear to come in peace but suddenly begin to use their super-powerful and technologically advanced weapons to wipe out the population and great structures. Soon, they attack Las Vegas, where the Norrises are living, where former heavyweight champion Byron Williams is visiting, where an obnoxious lawyer is gambling, and where Tom Jones is performing in concerts. |

Some Arabs hijack an airliner and demand the release of their leader who is in American custody. They also intend to land in Washington for refueling. At the Pentagon, everyone there advises the National Security Advisor that they should let the plane land and then let the counter terrorist team of Colonel Austin Travis take them out. But David Grant, an intelligence expert believes that this whole thing is a smokescreen. Grant believes that the Arab leader was abducted by his second in command, who is a fanatic. And that he has in his possession a biological weapon that could wipe out Washington and that it's on the plane. Now they have only two choices let them land and hope Grant is wrong or shoot the plane down along with every one onboard. Then Colonel Travis suggests that they use this new plane that the military uses to transport men from onto another aircraft while in flight. With no other option Travis is given the go ahead. He then asks that Grant be allowed to! |

American Special Forces arrest Russian General Ivan Radek (Jürgen Prochnow) who has taken over Kazakhstan and set up a dictatorship that has resulted in the death of thousands of people. James Marshall (Harrison Ford), the President of the USA, visits Moscow and makes a speech on the USA's get-tough policy with regard to the dictatorial regime and terrorism. On the flight back to Washington, a group of Russian nationalists disguised as newspaper reporters and led by the Ivan Korshunov (Gary Oldman) seize the plane and take the passengers hostage. They want the President to release General Radek from prison and threaten to kill the hostages unless their demands are met. Everybody is sure that the President manages to escape from the plane in an emergency capsule. However, Marshall, a combat hero in the Vietnam War, considers it to be his duty to stay on board to rescue the hostages and regain control of the plane. |
