They saw football and team spirit as a positive way for the felons to overcome their fears and frustrations, gain self-esteem and learn social responsibility. Porter didn't think that his proposal would meet with resistance from his skeptical bosses and coaches at rival high schools who were unwilling to face juvenile delinquents on the football field.
