The biopic depicts the life of Johnny Cash (Joaquin Phoenix), a legendary country and rock-and-roll singer-songwriter. The early years of his life were saddened by his elder brother's tragic death and his father's scornful attitude towards him (his dad considered Cash to be a bad son). The soon-to-be musician served in the United States Air Force in Germany. After his discharge Cash married his sweetheart, Vivian Liberto (Ginnifer Goodwin), who gave birth to four daughters. But their marriage was not without shadows as he neglected his family duties and devoted all his time and energy mainly to playing the guitar and singing along with his two close friends. At the age of 23, he released his first hit "Cry Cry Cry" and soon went on a tour of the USA, along with Jerry Lee Lewis (Waylon Payne), Elvis Presley (Tyler Hilton) and June Carter (Reese Witherspoon). He adored June and her songs since he was a kid. When their paths crossed, he came to realize that June was a woman of his dreams. He had been trying to win her hand for several years. The critical moments in his life were accompanied by his addiction to amphetamine and alcohol. In 1968, Cash and Carter got married and lived together long and happily till death did them part. |

In New York City, Dahlia (Jennifer Connelly) has just divorced from her husband and is disputing the custody of their daughter Cecilia (Ariel Gade). She has a very restricted budget, so she moves with Cecilia to an old small apartment in an island near Manhattan. She does not pay attention to a stain of water on the ceiling of the bedroom, but once living in the place, she realizes that there is a drip of dark water in the bedroom and she asks the landlord to repair the leakage. Meanwhile, Cecilia finds a red Hello Kitty bag on the terrace, and Dahlia returns it to the administrator. In school, the teacher tells Dahlia that Cecilia has an imaginary friend called Natasha. Along the days, Dahlia has severe migraines and nightmares, while disputing her daughter in the justice and having troubles in the apartment. Dahlia decides to investigate further, and she faces a tragic accident. |

It's the year 2035, and the community now has the help of robots. These robots have three laws integrated into their system. One, they cannot harm a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm. Two, they must do whatever they're told by a human being as long as such orders don't conflict with law one. Three, they have to defend themselves as long as such defense doesn't conflict with laws one or two. One day, the writer of the three laws, Alfred Lanning, apparently jumps out of the tenth-floor window of U.S. Robotics. The majority of the Chicago Police Department believe that he committed suicide, but Detective Del Spooner (Smith), who hates robots, thinks he was murdered, and the number one suspect is a Nestor Class-5 robot who calls himself Sonny.
