After having served a 6-year sentence for car theft, Rudy Duncan (Ben Affleck) is about to go at large. His cellmate and best buddy Nick Cassidy (James Frain) is to be released from prison the same day but he is suddenly killed during a prison mutiny with only three days left to serve. Rudy makes up his mind to assume his dead cellmate's identity to start a relationship with his gorgeous pen pal, Ashley Mercer (Charlize Theron). Rudy, however, is unaware that Ashley's brother Gabriel (Gary Sinise) and his gang of thugs plot to rob a gambling casino in Michigan where Nick used to work, thus, Ashley is just tempting bait for Nick to be trapped into an armed heist on Christmas Eve. And now this seemingly funny idea of pretending to be Nick can cost Rudy his life. |

Crane, the highly educated man believing only in logic, is certain that it is a ruthless serial murderer who wanders in the nearby woods. But when he launches his investigation, he encounters terrifying, inexplicable phenomena.

Telling the story in flashback we see David as he grows up and into a child prodigy while his father abuses him and his siblings with the memory of his childhood in Europe and the loss of his family in the concentration camps. David finally breaks away from his father and goes away to study overseas, he later suffers a breakdown and returns to Australia and a life in an institution. Many years later he is released and through several twists of fate (in reality even more unlikely than film portrays) he starts playing a piano in a bar before finally returning to the concert hall. |

This movie is based on the real events and on the book by Nicholas Pileggi which encloses an adaptation of the real entries of judgement which was held in Cansas-City when the Las Vegas' mafia bosses was convicted there.
