When a four-year-old girl, Amanda McCready (Madeline O'Brien), goes mysteriously missing in Dochester, one of Boston's toughest neighborhoods, and the local police fail to solve the case, her aunt, Beatrice McCready (Amy Madigan), turn to two private investigators for help. Patrick Kenzie (Casey Affleck) and Angie Gennaro (Michelle Monaghan) reluctantly start an investigation as they have little experience with this type of case. But they succeed in getting on the trail of the girl's abductors due to criminal contacts. They discover that Amanda's drug-addicted mother, Helen (Amy Ryan), and her boyfriend cleaned out one of the local drug dealers who in revenge kidnapped the kid. They promise to pay him back in exchange for the girl; however, the switch goes horribly awry. Patrick and Angie come to realize that they have taken on the perilous job but their professional arrogance forces them to see it through. |

Nearly a decade after Cate Blanchett drew the attention of audiences and critics alike with ELIZABETH, the Oscar-winning actress returns to the role of the Virgin Queen. Though the protestant ruler has been on the throne for decades in 1585, Elizabeth I's reign is still under attack from both inside her country and from the continent. Her cousin, Mary, Queen of Scots (Samantha Morton), carries the favour of the nation's Catholics as she schemes for the throne from prison, while Spain's King Philip II (Jordi Molla) plots an invasion with the power of his famous armada. But Elizabeth is also concerned with the arrival of Sir Walter Raleigh (Clive Owen), a charming pirate and adventurer. Unable to reconcile her feelings with her crown, she encourages Bess (Abbie Cornish), her beloved lady-in-waiting, to pursue a relationship with Raleigh.
Nine years haven't dulled Blanchett's ability to play this—or any other—character with an impressive range of fire and tenderness. Her chemistry with the infinitely watchable Owen is one of the film's highlights. As in ELIZABETH, director Shekhar Kapur doesn't restrict himself from using artfully constructed shots that aren't normally used in period dramas. It's a modern retelling of history, and Kapur and his director of photograpy, Remi Adefarasin, aren't content to let the film have the standard look of many films in the genre. Costume designer Alexandra Byrne follows the same logic, creating stunning dresses for Elizabeth that draw inspiration both from modernity and the time period. If Blanchett weren't such a gifted actress, the gorgeous costumes might threaten to overtake her as the star of the film. |

Cris Johnson (Nicolas Cage) was born with a special gift to see two minutes into the future and change it to suit himself. Unwilling to attract attention to his ability, he works as a magician with the stage name of Frank Cadillac, performing third-rate shows in Las Vegas and living off "winnings" on slot machines. Unfortunately for Cris, both casino security and the FBI somehow learn of his power and want to take advantage of it. The casino bosses want him to rob the house. FBI agent Callie Ferris (Julianne Moore) wants him to thwart the detonation of a nuclear device in Los Angeles. Cris, however, wants nothing to do with the former and the latter. In the 70's in Afghanistan, the Pushtun boy Amir and the Hazara boy Hassan, who is his loyal friend and son of their Hazara servant Ali, are raised together in Amir's father house, playing and kitting on the streets of a peaceful Kabul. In return, Amir feels a great respect for his father's best friend Rahim Khan, who supports his intention to become a writer. After Amir winning a competition of kitting, Hassam runs to bring a kite to Amir, but he is beaten and raped by the brutal Assef in an empty street to protect Amir's kite; the coward Amir witness the assault but does not help the loyal Hassam. On the day after his birthday party, Amir hides his new watch in Hassam's bed to frame the boy as a thief and force his father to fire Ali, releasing his conscience from recalling his cowardice and betrayal. In 1979, the Russians invade Afghanistan and Baba and Amir escape to Pakistan. In 1988, they have a simple life in Fremont, California, when Amir graduates in a public college for the pride and joy of Baba. Later Amir meets his countrywoman Soraya and they get married. In 2000, after the death of Baba, Amir is a famous novelist and receives a phone call from the terminal Rahim Khan, who discloses secrets about his family, forcing Amir to return to Peshawar, in Pakistan, in a journey of redemption. |
