The action takes place in Japan in the 1870s. The mystery thriller tells two stories. Caught up in a nasty rainstorm, ten strangers have to spend the night at an old motel in a godforsaken small town. Among the travellers are parents (Leila Kenzle and John C. McGinley) with a young son (Bret Loehr); a cop (Ray Liotta) transporting a convict (Jake Busey); a limousine driver (John Cusack); a movie star (Rebecca De Mornay); a young couple (Clea DuVall and William Lee Scott); and a call girl (Amanda Peet).
