When Rowena Price (Halle Berry), a reporter for a major New York paper, launches an investigation into murdering her childhood friend Grace (Nicki Aycox), the trail leads her to Harrison Hill (Bruce Willis), a powerful chief executive officer of a large advertising agency. What she needs to bring the supposed killer to justice is to get the goods on him. With the support of her associate Miles Haley (Giovanni Ribisi), she starts playing the bitter perilous game, posing as Katherine, a temp secretary at Hill's company, and Veronica, a girl the concupiscent Hill flirts with in an Internet chat room. Weaving an intricate web for her prey to get caught, she unwittingly becomes entrapped in a web of deceit, betrayal, manipulation and false truths.

Christian missionary Katherine Winter (Hilary Swank) lost her faith on God after her dearly loved husband and daughter were sacrificed by the Sudanese who blamed them for the long drought. Since then Katherine, a college professor, has become a famous expert in refuting superstitions, mysteries and miracles, finding a scientific explanation for a particular event. One day she arrives in a sleepy town of Haven, Louisiana, to examine a series of inexplicable incidents that appear to be the ten biblical plagues. In the course of her investigation Katherine comes to the conclusion that science can't explain all phenomena; and she ultimately regains her faith which grants her the power to withstand the dark forces.

In 480 BC, the Persian king Xerxes sends his massive army to conquer Greece. In February, 1945, one of the fiercest battles of the Pacific theater of World War II occurs on the tiny island of Iwo Jima. Thousands of Marines attack the stronghold maintained by thousands of Japanese, and the slaughter on both sides is horrific. Early in the battle, an American flag is raised atop the high point, Mount Suribachi, and a photograph of the raising becomes an American cause celebre. As a powerful inspiration to war-sick Americans, the photo becomes a symbol of the Allied cause. The three surviving flag raisers, Rene Gagnon, John Bradley, and Ira Hayes, are whisked back to civilization to help raise funds for the war effort. But the accolades for heroism heaped upon the three men are at odds with their own personal realizations that thousands of real heroes lie dead on Iwo Jima, and that their own contributions to the fight are only symbolic and not deserving of the singling out they are experiencing. Each of the three must come to terms with the honors, exploitation, and grief that they face simply for being in a photograph. |

Quentin Tarantino was brought in and reportedly paid one dollar to direct an extended scene between Del Toro and Owen that amounts to one issue of The Big Fat Kill miniseries. |

Sylvia Broome (Nicole Kidman) is an interpreter. She is an expert in the obscure language of Ku, a dialect of the African Matobo, her homeland. Unintentionally she overhears a talk on Ku, where the deadly plot against the country ruler was mentioned. The life of Zuwanie (Earl Cameron), Matobo's controversial ruler, is under the treat, so as Sylvia's life. Realizing she's become a target of the assassins as well, Silvia is desperate to thwart the plot... if only she can survive long enough to get someone to believe her. Secret Service agent Tobin Keller (Sean Penn) is brought in to investigate Broome's story, and it isn't long before he's convinced that she knows more than she's willing to tell. Keller has his doubts. Is Silvia a witness or is she somehow connected to the threat against the African head of state? "The Interpreter" is a cat and mouse game with a few of the involved parties appearing to change sides throughout the process. Sometimes you should pay close attention in order to keep up with the plot (you can miss a key detail being away for a tea watching this film). |
