Tom Hanks plays Sam, a citizen of Seattle, a widower and a single father, whose son Jonah calls a radio talk show and tells America a sad story of their lonely life. Annie Reed (Meg Ryan) who lives thousands miles away from Seattle hears the program and decides to meet Sam feeling dissatisfaction with her fiancee. She writes a letter to the man whom she hasn't ever seen but whom she believes to be her only one. |

Doug Ireland is the concierge of a ritzy hotel in New York. He does what he has to to satisfy the hotel's guests, by getting them what they need; like jewelry, candy mints, and theatre tickets. He also tries to keep the manager from terminating Milton, the bellhop, who was been working at the hotel for more than half a century, who likes to think that the spirit of the hotel's founder is still around. Doug wants to open his own hotel on Roosevelt Island. Now he has saved every cent he could to get an option on an old hotel. Now he has a matter of weeks to develop the hotel or else he will lose it. But to do it he needs at least 3 million dollars and his best chance to get it is Christian Hanover. While Hanover considers Doug's proposal, he asks him to "take care" of his girlfriend, Andy, a girl whom Doug has the hots for but is constantly turned down when he asks her out, cause she doesn't want to be two timing her boyfriend, Hanover. Now Hanover is married but says that "he will divorce his wife and marry her". Doug doesn't exactly believe him but thinks that his hotel is more important and Andy can make her own decisions. But the more Doug spends with Andy, Doug is starting to wonder what is important. |

Newton Davis (Steve Martin) has loved Becky Metcalf (Dana Delany) since his schooldays. A talented architect, he builds a dream house in his hometown of Dobbs Mills and presents it to his sweetheart with a marriage proposal. But Becky rejects the offer, considering him to be an impulsive dreamer and loser. Heartbroken, Davis leaves his house abandoned and goes back to New York. Some time later, the architect ends up in a Hungarian restaurant to drown his sorrows in wine and meets an attractive waitress named Gwen (Goldie Hawn) to whom he hastily pours out his sad story. After spending one night together, Gwen decides to take advantage of the situation. She heads for Davis's native town, tracks down his house and takes up residence, pretending to be his wife. She promptly charges her purchases to the 'Newton Davis' account and gets acquainted with his parents and neighbors who are immediately taken with the open-hearted, romantic creature. When Davis shows up at his newly-built house, he finds himself surrounded by the neighbors who offer him their congratulations on his marriage and the store owners who want to get money... |

An elderly Jewish widow living in Atlanta can no longer drive. Her son insists she allow him to hire a driver, which in the 1950s meant a black man. She resists any change in her life but, Hoke, the driver is hired by her son. She refuses to allow him to drive her anywhere at first, but Hoke slowly wins her over with his native good graces. The movie is directly taken from a stage play and does show it. It covers over twenty years of the pair's life together as they slowly build a relationship that transcends their differences. |
