Professional daredevil and white-suited hero, The Great Leslie, convinces turn-of-the-century auto makers that a race from New York to Paris (westward across America, the Bering Straight and Russia) will help to promote automobile sales. Leslie's arch-rival, the mustached and black-attired Professor Fate vows to beat Leslie to the finish line in a car of Fate's own invention. The Blake Edwards style of slapstick and song originated with this movie. A dedication to Laurel and Hardy appears at the beginning of the film. Edwards' tribute to Stan and Ollie can be seen most clearly in the interaction between Professor Fate and his cohort Max, as well as in the operatic Pottsdorf pie fight. |

From the very moment a seemingly strict but wonderfully smart and magical nanny Mary Poppins (Julie Andrews) appears from nowhere and bursts, as a fresh wind, into the dull, routine and conservative Banks household, this family's life is changed forever. This lady slides up banisters, flies with help of her bizarre parrot-like umbrella, makes medicine taste like delicious strawberry ice-cream, talks to animals and can easily turn an ordinary walk into a wonderful adventure! The film's seamless cohesion of live-action with animation was a miracle in its day. This animated feature is set in medieval times. After the English king dies leaving no heir, in the churchyard of a cathedral in London, a sword appears imbedded in a stone inscribed, "Who so pulleth out this sword of this stone and anvil is rightwise king born of England." Although many try, no one can budge the sword from the stone. Deep in the dark woods, kind, but absent-minded Merlin the Magician begins to teach 11-year-old Arthur, who is called Wart, and lives in the castle of Sir Ector where he's an apprentice squire to burly, oafish Sir Kay — when he's not washing stacks of pots and pans in the scullery. By being changed by Merlin into various animals, Wart learns the basic truths of life, but he also runs into the evil Madam Mim, who tries to destroy him. Merlin and Mim have a Wizards' Duel, during which each changes into various creatures, with Merlin using his wits to win. On New Year's Day, a great tournament is held in London to pick a new king. Wart, attending as Kay's squire, forgets Kay's sword, and runs back to the inn to get it, but the inn is locked. Wart, seeing the sword in the stone, innocently, and easily, pulls it out. When the knights marvel at the wondrous sword and question where he got it, Wart has to prove himself all over again, and again he pulls the sword from the stone. Wart is proclaimed king by the marveling warriors. Wart as King Arthur is apprehensive of his ability to govern, but Merlin returns to reassure him. |

When a new princess is born to King Stefan & his wife, the entire kingdom rejoices. At a ceremony, three good fairies - Flora, Fauna & Merryweather - bestow gifts of magic on the child. But an evil sorceress named Maleficent shows up, and because of a rude remark by Merryweather, she places a curse on the princess - that she will die on her 16th birthday after touching a poisoned spinning wheel. Merryweather tries to undo the damage by casting a spell that will allow the princess - named Aurora - to awake from an ageless sleep with a kiss from her true love. The fairies take Aurora to their cottage in the woods to keep her away from the eyes of Maleficent, and raise her as their own child, named Briar Rose. On her 16th birthday Aurora meets Prince Phillip, the son of a king whose own kingdom will soon merge with King Stefan's - and falls in love. Maleficent manages to kidnap the Prince and her horrible prophecy is fulfilled when she tricks Aurora into touching a spinning wheel created by Maleficent herself! Realizing that the Prince is in trouble, the 3 good fairies head to Maleficent's castle at the Forbidden Mountain, and spring the Prince loose. But the Prince soon finds himself up against Maleficent's army of brutes, and the power of Maleficent's evil spells - which include a thorn forest as thick as weeds around King Stefan's castle, and a fight against Maleficent when she turns herself into a dragon! Is the Prince strong enough to withstand the powers of the evil sorceress? |

The economy, dependent almost exclusively on exporting their wine, Pinot Grand Fenwick, to the USA, is on the brink of bankruptcy as the State of California begins producing a cheaper version, Pinot Grand Enwick. The scheming Prime Minister comes up with the idea of declaring war on the USA, losing, and then accepting foreign aid. |

After the end of World War II, two reserve officers Bob Wallace (Bing Crosby) and Phil Davis (Danny Kaye) create one of the most successful song-and-dance act in the USA. When fate brings the buddies and two sisters, Betty (Rosemary Clooney) and Judy Haynes (Vera-Ellen), together, Bob and Phil become attracted to the girls and decide to travel with them to a ski-resort lodge in Vermont for White Christmas. On their arrival, the guys face two big surprises: the inn is run by their former commander, Major General Thomas F. Waverly (Dean Jagger), and it's about to go under due to lack of snow and consequent lack of guests. Wallace and Davis come up with a brilliant idea to form a quartet and perform a Christmas show to benefit the struggling lodge. |
