Living a secluded life in an abandoned hotel, Jacob Goodnight (Glen Jacobs), a monstrous maniacal killer with corroded steel plate screwed into his skull and razor-sharp fingernails, doesn’t expect any company. Six adventure-seeking students decide to travel to Brazil for a vacation. Exotic landscapes, beautiful animals, and exciting meetings – nothing indicated that danger was in store for them. The nightmare begins when they barely struggle out of a crashed bus just before it plunges off a cliff. The young travelers find themselves marooned in the middle of nowhere. Unwilling to wait for another rickety bus, they follow a track through the jungle and find a bar located on a white-sand beach. They make a reckless decision to stay in the place, drinking and dancing with the locals. The next morning the hapless tourists wake up with a dreadful hangover and all their possessions stolen. Trying to find police, they walk to a small village through the dense Brazilian jungle that is too difficult for the average traveler to traverse and conceals chilling secrets. The tourists don’t know that they will soon fall victims to a bloody agenda of a deranged doctor (Miguel Lunardi).

After a U.S. doctor in Morgue (Scott Wilson) orders a South Korean soldier to discharge toxic chemicals into the drain near the Han River in Seoul, a small tadpole grows into a monstrous creature. The story and screenplay of this successful movie was written by famed singer-songwriter Nick Cave. In the press notes he says that he set out to write "a cohesive but mythical story that moved forward and was simple and affecting, as well as highly emotionally charged". This fine-tuned allegory relates to the cyclical bloodshed and is brutally violent, but its message is also brutally honest and meditative. The renegade Murphy brothers are in conflict with the controversial law enforcer (Ray Winstone). When two of the brothers are captured by authorities, the older (Guy Pearce) is given by a no-win choice: hunt and kill the lunatic Murphy Gang mastermind, his eldest brother Arthur (Danny Huston), otherwise the youngest (Richard Wilson) gets a hemp-tie on the gallows. This western reeks of the dry desert, with flies buzzing, temperatures soaring, and emotions spiraling out of control in the dusty, desolate and virtually lawless air of 1880s of the rural Australia. |
