An aging but strong distinguished-looking man, Robert "Mac" MacDougal (Sean Connery), is known as the world's greatest art thief who has never been caught in flagrante. After the theft of an invaluable Rembrandt painting from a New York skyscraper, Mac meets another talented thief, Virginia "Gin" Baker (Catherine Zeta-Jones). The charming woman is in fact an ingenious insurance investigator who hopes to win Robert's confidence and entrap him. They start collaborating and their first team task of stealing an ancient Chinese gold mask is done skillfully. Inspired by this success, they come up with a new, even more daring scheme for an eight billion dollar heist from the world's largest bank that is supposed to be done during the last ten minutes before the new millennium. As usual, a love affair takes place between a man and a woman, so Mac and Gin are fated to fall victim to Cupid's arrows. |

The biopic comedy relates the story of Andy Kaufman (Jim Carrey), a famous American entertainer, actor and performance artist who was able to stir any audience. An eccentric, extraordinary person and an enigmatic comedian, he gave bizarre performances making the audience empathize with him, hate him or wonder at his escapades. He made them show their emotions, as opposed to just sitting in front of a TV and swallowing cheap jokes. The movie takes a profound look at Kaufman's art as well as his personal life and his relationship with his girlfriend Lynne Margulies (Courtney Love), his best pal and partner Bob Zmuda (Paul Giamatti), and his manager George Shapiro (Danny DeVito).

The movie follows the ancient Greek names, thus it is irrelevant to use the Roman name Ulysses. Generally, it was poorly written. Homer's classic epic poem about the hero, Odysseus, and his travels home after the infamous ten year battle of Troy, is brought to the silver screen. The gods seize the opportunity to make Odysseus and his crew the pawns in their games; forcing Odysseus to take unbelievable detours that add years to his journey home. These detours throw him into conflict with great mythological creatures like Circe, the Cyclops, and Poseidon, and ultimately bring him into Hades itself. Meanwhile, Odysseus' wife, Penelope, worries that her husband is dead and is forced to fight off suitors who want to claim his kingdom. Through all of this Odysseus must keep faith and fight to find his way back home, with only the aid of the goddess Athena. |

One of the most successful roles of Johnny Depp is William Blake, a young accountant who arrived at the distant town to work at the doubtful manufacture having a one way ticket. At the very first evening he gets into a very disagreeable, Wild-West-style story, and now he has to go into hiding, being hunted down by three cutthroats who have the only purpose - to kill him and then to deliver to the powerful manufacture owner. Being on the run, he suddenly meets the strange Indian who call himself Nobody and offers William his help. This rather surrealistic, black-and-white metaphoric movie is very stylish and intricate at some points, but a severely DEPPressive one as the theme of the last journey of any human seems to be one of the main counterpoints of the picture. Also starring are Iggy Pop, Crispin Glover, Billy Bob Thornton and Lance Henricksen.

After a waterfront explosion, Verbal (Kevin Spacey), an eye-witness and participant tells the story of events leading up to the conflagration. The story begins when five men are rounded up for a line-up, and grilled about a truck hijacking (the usual suspects). Least pleased is Keaton (Gabriel Byrne) a crooked cop - exposed, indicted, but now desperately trying to go straight. The cops won't leave him alone, however, and as they wait for their lawyers to post bail, he is talked into doing one more job with the other four. All goes tolerably well until the influence of the legendary, seemingly omnipotent "Keyser Soze" is felt. Although set in the modern day, it has much of the texture of the forties, plus suspense, intrigue (a fairly high body count), and lots of twists in the plot. |
