Two orphans, Prosper and Bo, are escaped from their cruel aunt and uncle. In Venice they meet a mysterious boy who calls himself "the Thief Lord." From their home base of an old cinema theater, the children steal from the rich to support themselves and soon capture the interest of an awkward detective. When a detective assigned the task of bringing the youngsters in becomes privy to their impoverished plight, he joins them in solving the mystery of a powerful merry-go-round that appears to have special powers. The Thief Lord invites them on a magical adventure to a land of forgotten mysteries that will change their lives forever.
