In the 15th century, France was entangled in the Hundred Years' War with England. When the country seemed to be threatened with its inevitable downfall, Joan of Arc (Milla Jovovich), a 17-year-old illiterate peasant girl, appeared at the court of the French Dauphin, Charles (John Malkovich). She claimed that she had been instructed by the Lord to lead troops into a holy battle and defend their land against the aggressors. Inspired by the charismatic, self-confident, strong and fearless maiden, warriors won a victory over the English at Orleans. A year later, Joan was captured by the Burgundian and sold to their allies, the English, who tried her for heresy and burnt alive at the stake. In 1456, she was pronounced innocent. In 1920, Joan of Arc was declared a national heroine and canonized a saint.

Without words, cameras show us the world, with an emphasis not on "where," but on "what's there." It begins with morning, natural landscapes and people at prayer: volcanoes, water falls, veldts, and forests; several hundred monks do a monkey chant. Indigenous peoples apply body paint; whole villages dance. The film moves to destruction of nature via logging, blasting, and strip mining. Images of poverty, rapid urban life, and factories give way to war, concentration camps, and mass graves. Ancient ruins come into view, and then a sacred river where pilgrims bathe and funeral pyres burn. Prayer and nature return. A monk rings a huge bell; stars wheel across the sky.

This crazy, unabashed parody refers to many well-known movies of different genres - from action to patriotic and erotic films. Topper Harley (Charlie Sheen) has to return back from his self-exile, because he is a brilliant pilot and the Government chosen him for the secret air force mission. Comical situations which resemble different scenes from various blockbusters can make you hee-haw, because this film is one of the first and the best parodies among various "Scary movies" and other following films which are sometimes not as good as this one.

This historical war drama represents a serious attempt to reflect the bravery of a group of Civil War soldiers - the 54th Regiment of Massachusetts - often disregarded by history. They were a troop of free black men who fought foolhardily to help win liberty for their people. The historical novels ONE GALLANT RUSH by Peter Burchand and LAY THIS LAUREL by Lincoln Kirstein, as well as the letters of Robert Gould Shaw, served as basis for the film featuring Colonel Shaw (Matthew Broderick) the officer in the Federal Army who volunteered to lead the 54th. Shaw had to face the prejudices of both the enemy side (the order was to kill all black commanding officers) and of his own fellow officers.
